Eternal Longing
A Poem of Unrequited Love and Heartbreak
Tell her when you reach her,
That I died of love for her,
And remind her of me, with all that’s beautiful,
And if she weeps for me, then let her weep,
And take her to my grave, where my bones long
To feel her gentle feet pressing down on them.
On the day of resurrection, I will not be troubled, if only
I could hope to see her there.
Even if Paradise was my reward,
And its fire my punishment,
I would run to God and knock my forehead on his door,
And fill the sky with my lamentations of love,
So that the righteous would be distracted from their worship,
And love would walk among the angels,
Until even Gabriel feared their judgment.
I said, “O Lord, what crime did she commit,
What sin did she do to deserve this?”
You melted in the magic of her enchanting eyes,
And were entangled by the cords of her spell.
You sweetened her heart with the honey of her eyes,
And freed the hem of her dress to reveal her.
From that moment, you became famous for your cruelty,
