In Your Absence

A World Unimagined

As I sit by the seaside, the setting sun paints the sky with strokes of fire and gold. My thoughts travel across miles to where you are. In this moment of solitude, the vast ocean before me mirrors the distance between us, yet my heart feels closer to you than ever.

I can not imagine a world where you don’t exist, just like I can’t imagine a sea without its beautiful blue hat, a moon deprived of its milky bath, or a star unadorned by its glittering bracelets.

How can planets fathom spinning, how can wheat rise, and fishes multiply without your silent command? How can frogs chatter in rivers and crickets sing in forests without a nod from you?

How can there be four seasons if your voice doesn’t grace them with its melody? It’s difficult, almost impossible, to grasp.

It’s hard for me, so hard, to envision a history that doesn’t chronicle you, a writing that doesn’t script you, or a poem that doesn’t beat with your rhythm, doesn’t drink from your springs. A painting that doesn’t seek inspiration from you, or a bronze or stone sculpture not modeled after your form.

It’s incredibly hard to conceive of a world where your essence doesn’t fill every space, a café devoid of your scent, or a sandy beach missing the imprint of your footsteps.
